Algeria’s 950km Railway Line Set To Bolster National Economy
With steady steps and a well-defined forward-looking vision, Algeria is currently experiencing a significant economic renaissance. The initial signs of this transformation are beginning to appear and impact public life. Recently, strategic projects have been launched by the State to bolster national economic resources and capitalise on the country’s abundant natural wealth. Foremost among these initiatives is the Gara Djebilet mine development project, which the public authorities are banking on to bring about a true industrial transformation, ensuring the supply of necessary raw materials for the advancement of both heavy and light industries.
This strategic endeavour is supported by a crucial infrastructure component: the construction of the Western Mining Railway line, Tindouf – Béchar – Gara Djebilet, representing the largest railway project in Algeria’s history, under the close supervision and regular monitoring of the President of the Republic. Spanning 950 km, the Western Mining Railway will link the Gara Djebilet mine to the ore processing and transformation units in Tindouf and Béchar. From there, it will facilitate the transport of essential resources along the Béchar – Oran line and then to the industrial areas and factories connected to the national railway network. Additionally, this line will provide passenger and freight services between Tindouf and Béchar and the cities in the north. Following high-level directives to expedite the completion of this strategic line in compliance with prevailing standards, the line has been divided into sections and entrusted to three consortia of companies.
The National Agency for the Study and Monitoring of Railway Investment Implementation, as the delegated project manager, has played a pivotal role by coordinating all necessary measures to ensure that work progresses at the required pace. From the outset, it mobilised substantial human and material resources, alongside thousands of machines, which continue to arrive progressively at the various active construction sites along the line.
In summary, the 950-kilometre Western Mining Railway project, connecting the strategic regions of Tindouf, Béchar, and Gara Djebilet, represents a foundational pillar of Algeria’s industrial and economic development. Its purpose extends beyond iron ore exploitation, contributing to modernising transportation infrastructure, facilitating commercial exchange, and enabling population mobility.
