Africa Global Logistics Officially Launches AGL Lobito Terminal
Africa Global Logistics (AGL), a leading provider of logistics and port operations in Africa, has officially inaugurated its subsidiary, AGL Lobito Terminal (ALT), in a ceremony presided over by the Honourable Dr. Ricardo Viegas of Abreu, Minister of Transport of Angola. The event was also attended by AGL President Philippe Labonne and officials from Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The terminal’s operations are supported by the 730 employees of AGL Lobito Terminal, along with the handling equipment, information systems, and landfills of the container and conventional terminal of the Port of Lobito. With a quay depth of 14 meters, the terminal has the capacity to accommodate large vessels and handle more than one million tonnes of bulk goods and over 100,000 TEU containers annually.
AGL has committed to an investment plan of 100 million euros to enhance the terminal’s appeal and contribute to the economic and social development of the region. Through its maritime, port, and logistics solutions, AGL aims to position the Lobito port platform as a catalyst for growth in Angola and the wider sub-region.
By elevating Lobito port services to international standards, AGL is initiating an industrial project that, with support from the world’s leading shipowner, MSC, will enhance the connectivity of Angola’s port platform. Consequently, the Port of Lobito is set to foster sustainable growth and bolster regional integration.
Ricardo Viegas D’Abreu, the Angolan Minister of Transport, expressed the government’s satisfaction with forming a partnership with a prominent African logistics operator. The collaboration is expected to significantly benefit the socio-economic development of the region through the Port of Lobito. By linking the port with the extensive Benguela railway network, which spans over 1300 km, and a forthcoming railway line to Zambia, efforts to enhance the platform’s productivity are anticipated to greatly reduce the delivery times for transporting goods.
Philippe Labonne, President of Africa Global Logistics (AGL), highlighted that the Lobito Terminal is a testament to their strategy aimed at improving living conditions and boosting economic competitiveness. The terminal, through robust and multimodal logistics solutions, addresses the continent’s challenges. It is positioned to play a crucial role in providing market access and supporting industries that are vital to the global economy, especially those involved in the shift towards renewable energy sources.
