CFM supports Malawi with the transport of Material for the Railway Line Reconstruction Works

Vila Nova da Fronteira signThe Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) company carried out the first official train transporting material for the reconstruction of the Malawian Railway Line, departing from Vila Nova da Fronteira.

The material, consisting (at this stage) of cement, left Porto da Beira last Friday, February 3rd and belongs to the Chinese Company CR20, responsible for the reconstruction of the Malawian Railway. CR20’s bet is that most of the material to be used in the works passes through Vila Nova da Fronteira.

PR Laying of the first stone for the reconstruction of the Dona Ana Vila Nova da Fronteira railway lineIt should be recalled that the execution of this important Project, which will respond to the challenges of the logistics chain in the Southern Africa Region in the context of SADC, follows the guidance given at the meeting between the 2 Heads of State (Mozambique and Malawi) held in Songo , at the end of 2020, whose laying of the 1st Stone for the work on the Mozambican side was presided over by the President of the Republic, Eng. Filipe Jacinto Nuysi, in May 2021.

With national labor and own funds, CFM carried out the works within the specified period, valued at 30 million US Dollars, in an extension of 44 km, waiting for the Malawian counterpart, whose works are presented at the present level of transport mobilization of material and earthworks.

The Dona Ana – Vila Nova da Fronteira Railway Line has been paralyzed since September 1986, following the national destabilization war.

The operationalization of this Line will allow, in a 1st phase, the circulation of commercial cargo trains from the Port of Beira to neighboring Malawi and, later, the circulation of Passenger Trains, a CFM Corporate Social Responsibility action.

With this reconstruction, the Line has a capacity of 20.5 Tons per axle, against the previous 16.5 Tons per axle and the circulation speed will increase from the previous 30 km/hour to 60 km/h, meaning, therefore, capable of transporting 3.0 MTPA and with possibilities to support more, according to the demand.
